323i with ported head and shrick 277 Cam (archive)

I can get me a rust bucket that has had the head redone. I don't know much about the block but that head sounds tempting.
Can anyone tell me what the combo does to the engine.
The engine starts and sounds good but the differential is completely buggered and doesn't engage (maybe overpowered by the engine?)so I can't drive it.

What should I pay for such a car? Is is worth buying the car for the head?
