THat's some good advice you brought up. Did you have spark going to the plugs when you first diagnosed the problem?

My situation on the 323i mirrored that of yours...nuisance warm start problem that turned into catastrophic no start at all once the car had been warmed up. I had to wait until engine cooled down or let it sit overnight.

Each time the car wouldn't start, I checked first for spark. I got spark at the tip of the plug wires. So I didn't concentrate on this portion.

I bought a CIS fuel pressure test kit, followed the How to tune up BOSCH injection book, followed the instructions, and proceeded to diagnose the fuel pressure. The first test was to determine warm up regulator pressure. IT was supposed to read ~ 1/4 of system pressure. I got system pressure instead...3-4 times too much pressure. Just like your situation, I got an "open loop" circuit. It was as if the fuel flowed right through the warm up regulator, and there was hardly any flow control.

I changed out the warm up regulator and damn(!!!) that sucker fired up and idled just as smooth as a new BMW! Cold or hot, the instant it fires up, it's ready to roll.

EVerything else checked out, except rest pressure. I am losing pressure after it sits a while. I should be getting 22psi, but am seeing pressure dropping linearly to 16 psi for the 1st 10 mins. I've changed the fuel pump check valve w/ another used unit, but no change. Next to investigate is the cold start valve leak. Finally, I'll check fuel injector leak. I'll let y'all know what I find w/ my problem.
