Motor Conversions???? (archive)

My 80 320i motor is just about toasted.

Rebuild is cost prohibitive compared with other makes vs.
end horsepower gained.

A friend suggested a Ford 2300cc 4cyl, as parts/motors/
performance upgrades are plentiful and not as costly as my
stock 1.8 litre.

Another suggested a BMW Big Six (?Bavaria?) motor, which
supposedly bolts right to my stock 5sp trans.

I'm stuck in this decision, and would appreciate any insights, advice, "I did this or that", or "this is heresy" input i can get.....
