BMW 6-cyl conversion is not exactly bolt-in. You'll need the front crossframe member from an E21 320/6 or 323i. There are other things you have to do as well, but check this message board.

As for the FORD 4 cyl.....I think a BMW 4-cyl is a much more refined motor than a FORD. However, a newer 4-cyl FORD engine may offer better reliability for less maintainance (in the long run). I would think the conversion would be cost prohibitive however.

If you're not in a hurry, cruise this message board and EBay. I've seen a lot of 320i motors (the M10 engine) come and go for low prices....direct bolt in.

My 80 320i motor is just about toasted.

Rebuild is cost prohibitive compared with other makes vs.
end horsepower gained.

A friend suggested a Ford 2300cc 4cyl, as parts/motors/
performance upgrades are plentiful and not as costly as my
stock 1.8 litre.

Another suggested a BMW Big Six (?Bavaria?) motor, which
supposedly bolts right to my stock 5sp trans.

I'm stuck in this decision, and would appreciate any insights, advice, "I did this or that", or "this is heresy" input i can get.....

Thanks!
