320i radio fit? (archive)

I have an '82 320i and want to upgrade the stereo. I know the vertical mount won't work for a CD player. Has anybody put a standard DIN sized radio in one of these cars? The metal mounting box for the stock radio is only 5.5 inches ( 14.0 cm ) deep. This is not deep enough for most new stereos?????
