It is a US 4-cylinder 320i. Under the skin, they are very similar to the 2002, except with Bosch K-jetronic injection and a 1.8 instead of 2.0 liter engine. The K-jet is very simple and reliable, the engines smoke a bit at high miles but run forever (no timing belt to replace every 40,000), and they are generally solid and well constructed. Think of the missing link between 2002 and E30 and you have the E21. Good cars. The six-cylinder models are 320/6 and 323i. Both are euro-only models, although some made it to the US. The 323i has 143HP stock and is quite quick. The 320/6 has 122HP stock and has an odd Solex 4-barrel carb. (the 323 has K-jet injection). Both have M20 six cylinder engines, just like the E30. $950 sounds fair for a clean and well-maintained but not perfect 320i.
Good Luck
