May I ad that bigger and heavier bumpers make the car less safe to drive. With the heavy bumpers, there is more weight at the extremities of the car, it increases the polar moment or inertia of extremities, and makes the car more prone to accidents. Hence lkess safe to my eyes.

But we all know it was an insurance thing back in the seventies...
