My K&N direct replacement lasts 8 years in my 79' 323i & still like new. I clean it like once a year & it makes quite different on all around performance ( not too much on my E30 ). Top end sells cold induction kit for E21 but never try it. I believe it feels same as direct replacement unless you also have a high performance exhaust to associate with.
