Hi

I get a strong smell of petrol from the back of the car when my 1981 323i is over half to 2/3 full of fuel. No fuel is leaking (even overnight I've put paper down in the garage and can't see any stains underneath) and I've looked everywhere for hoses or connections that are damp with fuel. Could the breathers for the tanks be blocked? Where are the breathers located and where do they vent? The car smells fine when less than half full? Smells of petrol even when cold?
Any ideas?

Cheers

Mike

Sounds like a small tank seam leak. Fuel is probably evaporating off the side of the tank before it drips on the ground. You'll need to have the tanks either replaced or resealed. Eastwoods makes a pretty good kit for that purpose for around $30.00, but it's a very labor intensive process.
