1) Has anyone ever removed a trackrod from the steering rack? I bent mine (one of them) and I need to switch it out. I do have the Haynes manual, but what I saw on the car didn't really match up.

2) Does the pad underneath the bonnet, I mean hood, serve any function other than to deaden noise to the outside? Mine is nasty and I want to take it off, but if it protects the paint from the engine heat (180 F by the time the air reaches the hood, maybe?) Another worry was that the pad could also help to keep heat in and decrease the engine warm up time, for especially cold days.
