Take out the rear seat. On the top side of the fuel tank you'll see the level gauage sending unit. IT seals to the tank with a small o-ring which deteriorate with time. This could be the problem.....i've heard this complaint before on this board. My E21 does the same, and I have the o-ring. But, I have not pulled the thing apart yet. Good luck.

Hi

I get a strong smell of petrol from the back of the car when my 1981 323i is over half to 2/3 full of fuel. No fuel is leaking (even overnight I've put paper down in the garage and can't see any stains underneath) and I've looked everywhere for hoses or connections that are damp with fuel. Could the breathers for the tanks be blocked? Where are the breathers located and where do they vent? The car smells fine when less than half full? Smells of petrol even when cold?
Any ideas?

Cheers

Mike
