Anyone ever cut their shifter? (archive)

Hey just wondering if it was possible to cut the gear shifter to get the knob a little lower. I noticed that there's at least an inch between my gear knob and the base of the shifter where the circumference gets a little larger. Are there any problems with doing this? Sick of it being so high up. thanks
