Yes cutting it is real easy.
Removing a inch or two will not produce any ill effects.
If you cut it way down gearchanges will become more of an effort to complete.
If you have a 80- model just pull up on the knob to remove it.
Pre 80 cars will simply unsrew.
Cut with the instrument of your choice, and install a aftermarket knob with setscrews.

Heres some pics of mine.


I actually used a chrome lever from a E12 5-series.
The lever on the left is aluminum from a 80- E21.
The one on the right is from a -79 model E21.
I only cut like 1.25 inch , I think.
