I bought my 79 for 600 bucks. At first, I purchased it for parts, and now my sister drives it. Here's what I looked for. I assumed, "there's something wrong with this car so it won't be driveable." I was wrong, it was okay, had a bit of a hard start, but nothing terrible. The interior was shot, the paint was shot, 3 dents that were bothersome. But the thing ran and drove, and had recaros and a 3.90LSD, so I bought it. I drove it for 3 months? maybe and it broke and wouldn't start. Turned out to be the fuel pump. No biggie, I got one at the junkyard for 10 bucks w/the pressure resivior and while I was there, picked up a perfect black interior, front and back, for 60 bucks. Already the car's looking better. It runs a bit rough, but it's strong, linkage could be better. I've also swapped wheels and tires, and am now in the process of replacing panels so I can paint it. But I've really had pretty minor problems with it, and for 600 bucks, it's been a pretty good car. Never stranded me! Basically, you'll want to look for the major components looking. Make sure the idle doesn't waver a whole lot, this can be an annoying fix (ALL the vacuum lines) and make sure expensive things (like the tranny and differential) don't make too much noise. If you're looking for a driver though, these cars can be pretty damn hardy, they're just finniky. I've no complaints with mine. Hope my rambling helps! -alan 83 320i 79 320i
