hey if I win could you make me that short shift kit?

No the "s" models dont have a special shift linkage.

Really the trans is not the problem, internally everything is pretty tight.
As we all know its the linkage that gets sloppy.
So this is basically what I did to make my own custom short shift kit (sounds imressive, huh?),I replaced the actual linkage (#6 in pic)with a quarter inch thick piece of flat stock steel.
Available at any machine shop. For pennies too.
I then had 2 holes drilled to tightly accept a fine thread half inch bolt on either end.
The bolt head is .75 inch.
The width between the 2 holes is fractionally longer than the stock linkage.
I also used 4 large washers (1" I think), one between each bolt head and the new linkage and one before each nut.
The stock linkage clips (#8)are really pretty lame and allow a lot of slack in side to side movement of the lever.
This is where the bolt & nut arrangement tighten things up considerably.
The bolt going through the selector shaft coupler(#9) can be tightened as much as possible.
The rear bolt going through the lower shift lever(#23)should be tight but still let the lever pivot back and forth.
After the nuts are tightened up I then installed half inch circlips to prevent them from backing off.
Really only the rear nut is at risk of loosening.
Also isolating the torsional movement of the shift coupler(#9)will provide lots of firmness.
I accomplished this by discarding the pin(#10) that secures it to the selector shaft.
And replacing it with a bolt and nut arrangement as well.
I also removed the felt(#11)on the inside and inserted some small crush washers to provide some tension.

So really the actual gear changing in the trans is fine(front and back movement).
Its just the stock linkage that is loose to begin with.
Oh yeah like I stated in the post below , I've also cut down my shift lever.
This will shorten the distance you have to pull or push between gears.
Man, this brings me to a whole nother point.
Lots of short kit makers just lenghten the lower shift lever down, thus increasing the lever action.
But like I've said , and we all pretty much know, it's the linkage that needs to be tightened up.

That should do it for now.

HTH,
Teaguer

P.S.: Please forgive my drawing talent , I just kinda cobbled this together real quick.
