I have tweaked my K-jet a bit , but mine's a 2 ltr so its a different beast than yours.
I can give you one trick that will let the engine make a bit more power : disconnect the water lines going into the throttle body.
Prevent any hot water from flowing into it.
This will yield a cooler incoming charge , making the air more dense.
So you can cram in more air.
I've also had the butterfly pivot significantly ground down , so when its open it is less of an obstacle for the incoming air.
There are also bored -out throttle bodies available.
You usually have to send yours in to get reworked.
Then theres always the option of converting to L-jetronic.
Seems pretty simple and straightforward from the "Enthusiasts Compannion" article .
As far as releasing the pressure , most people pull the fuel pump fuse and let the car run itself out of fuel.
But I've never had any problems just going to work on it.
Maybe a little fuel spillage when pulling the injectors , thats about it.
Our fuel pressure is nothing when compared to newer technology.

P.S.: I think that it may be possible to use a fuel distributor from a Euro VW GTI (A1) to get better fueling.
But dont trust me on this yet.
Can anyone shed some light on this ?
Maybe Al in Canada ?
