Back when I still ran 13's , I put on some 185/55/13's because I wanted a lower profile also.
You might consider the 185/60 or 195/60 size , but dont mistakenly think that a 205/60 will be any lower.
The 205/60 is a common size for those wanting a wider tire, but they look like donuts.
Whatever you do dont go with a 175/50 , those will look stupid.
Only run the 175/50's if you have wires or other reversed rims.(which shouldnt be on a BMW anyway)

Here are a couple of pics of the 185/55/13's

You will notice that that size will be more of a square tire , it will also be wider than the stock 185/70 .
Tires in the 185/55 size will be more of a performance tire , so will the 60 series tires.

As far as your future lowering , have you found springs in the states that will lower it 2" ?
The lowest springs that I've found available in the states are the Intrax springs , they lower it 1.75".
These are what I have , but I've also cut one coil off .
I plan on installing height adjustable collars and coil-overs soon , thats why I cut the Intrax's.

Also keep in mind that if you lower your car and then go with a lower profile tire , the tire will also lower your car some more.
I dont know what size your thinking about , but with my springs and the 185/55's my header collector was continually getting bottomed-out and ground down.
I was encountering leaks all the time at the collector , so I eventually had my header shortened a bit.

Oh yeah , If anyone is interested,I have the stock wheels with the BFG Comp T/A's 185/55's for sale , 5 of them .
Two tires are like new , the others are worn down .
I had planned on offering these to the '02 guys , 320 wheels are a popular upgrade for them.
