The smell is probably coming from one of the fuel level sending units. If you remove the rear seat you will see two round cover plates each held down with 4 screws remove both plates and start the car you will probably find one of the sending unit seals leaking (around the big plastic nut)sometimes the nut is just loose. Less common but still likely is the sending unit will crack where one of the hoses connects and cause a leak. I also saw an E36 that had a fuel hose that wasn't properly clamped from the factory and the hose had blown off of the fitting at the fuel pump outlet (passenger side fuel sending unit). If you check these areas and it is not leaking try filling it up with gas before you put the seat and cover plates back in place. Out of about 15 fuel leaks I have seen on the E36 all of them have been from this area.
