well, it might have been oil getting past the rings. I don't know anything about piston freeplay in the cylinder. If you decide to do rings, you may want to just do the whole bottom end. If you get new pistons, you'll need to measure the cylinder bores, and may as well at least hone them. If they are too far out of spec, you'll need to go to the first overbore, so pick the piston size accordingly. If you go to the first overbore, you may as well rebuild the engine since it'll already be apart.

Just my take on the situation. I dunno how much money you have to throw at it, or your level of technical expertise.
