To figure out how much to cut, measure the springs with your car resting on them and count coils back from the end. That's easier than figuring the spring rate after cutting -- you need the original spring rate -- then working back to a free length after cutting. Remember cutting a spring makes it stiffer as well as shorter, by the ratio of turns remaining in the spring.

In my case I cut one turn from the front and rear springs on my 528i, and the car lowered between 1-1/8 and 1-1/4. And it worked great--the car is still acceptable as a daily driver, though I do have to be careful and angle over speed bumps and parking lot ramps. And at a drivers' school, the old car kept up with new 325s in the corners. :-)
