whats the difference in brake pads? (archive)

I have an extra set of front pads for my 77 320i, and on the box it says they are asbestos, I thought it was illigal to make these pads anymore? dont companies make semi-metalic now instead?
what are advantages/disadvantages of these pads? as I also have a set of unknown brand new pads sitting in my calipers already,
just wonderin!
