If the pads have been lying around a while, they just might be a set left over from when asbestos was common in brake linings. Or they might have been manufactured last week in a country without our environmental protection.

If they are sort of tan-grey and fiberous looking, they just might be asbestos.

IMHO the asbestos pads are probably softer and easier on your rotors than semi-metallic, but are more likely to fade if you drive hard. YMMV, of course...
