It seems that the vaccuum hoses, if they were the problem, would have surfaced before Peter made the idle speed adjustment. I wonder if the adjustment screw for the idle might be loose enough for engine vibrations to change the adjustment. There is an o-ring that can be seen externally, and if that were to dry out, not too crazy a thing for a piece of rubber to do, it might make the adjuster screw loose.

What do you think? You could pull the old o-ring and get a match and try that out as an experiment; it wouldn't cost much.
