The head on the '80-'83 320i's is a 1.8i head...combustion chamber is different from that on the earlier head ('77-79, the E21 head). The heads, however, are not so different that they cause a 200cc variation in engine capacity; it's the STROKE that is different.

The 2.0L engine has an 89mm bore and an 80mm stroke. The 1.8L engine has an 89mm bore but a 76mm stroke (I *think* it's 76...may be 74, can't remember).
