e21 steering rack question (archive)

Rebuilt the front on my 1979 320. Installed new struts, tie rod ends, control arms, etc. Question - with everything installed I have a little "play" on the drivers side of the steering rack (with the car on jackstands & the wheels removed, if you grasp the hub & strut housing & shake it). None on the passenger side. I installed new urathane bushings in the rack and everything is tight & torqued to specs. Everything is smooth from lock to lock when turning. This rack has no damper. Is thisnormal or is the rack bad??
