Rebuilt the front on my 1979 320. Installed new struts, tie rod ends, control arms, etc. Question - with everything installed I have a little "play" on the drivers side of the steering rack (with the car on jackstands & the wheels removed, if you grasp the hub & strut housing & shake it). None on the passenger side. I installed new urathane bushings in the rack and everything is tight & torqued to specs. Everything is smooth from lock to lock when turning. This rack has no damper. Is thisnormal or is the rack bad??

Thanks for the help!!!
Mike

It Is normal to have wear there but it is something you want to repair. It is more than likely your inner tie rod end. I recently replaced mine and its not a difficult job. I paid $38.00 for mine and that included the inner and outer ends. The only place where you will run into trouble is that the socket end that screws onto the rack itself needs a thin wrench to properly grab it. I had a crows foot wrench that fit fine but you can always grind down a cheap wrench if you don't have one. There is a removable sheetmetal locking tab on the rack to keep the tie rod from working loose. It is important to replace it or use a locking fluid on it. Don't take chances with your steering.
