hoisting engine out of e21-where to place hoist? (archive)

For those who's done this, do you take the hood off and then slide the hoist running parallel to the length of the driveshaft
Or is the preferred way to do it on these e21 is to leave the hood intact and slip the hoist between the front tires and perpendicular to driveshaft length?

I'd be nice to know so I can position the car where there's ample concrete to roll the engine out after it's pulled.
