In Reply to: Driver and pass Side Mirror Glass Removal...HELP! posted by Pete on May 20, 2001 at 20:59:39:

" Okay, I was finally able to get a pair of power side mirrors for my car (off a early / mid 1980's 325). I need to repaint them, but realized they were not identical to the ones that were on my '88 M3. They look the same but unlike the '88 M3 mirrors you cannot remove the glass by accessing the locking mechanism from the drain hole on the underside of the mirror. Can anyone help me out with instructions on how to safely remove the glass.

Thanks

Pete "

If you got the mirrors from a E30 to put on a E21 they will not fit perfectly .
The mounting triangle is not the same , sure you can bolt them on but it wont be a direct bolt-on .
The correct mirrors for a E21 are the late E21 from 80-on or the mirrors from any year E28 5-series .

As for the glass , you have to use something like a really sharp putty knife or gasket scraper .
Just slide it behind the glass and basically cut through the bonding material .
