white smoke could be steam (headgasket or cracked head), but that's not likely - you'd see your oil turning brown from water contamination. Bad valve guides would give you white smoke on start up, but wouldn't effect your idle by themselves. I suspect shot rings. That will let oil from the crankcase get into the combustion chaber when the piston is on the downstroke. If they are really bad that could effect your idle as well. The only way to check is to do a leak-down test where you measure the cylinder pressure with a guage to see how well it holds it's pressure.
