Check your coolant level. If it is slowly (or quickly) disappearing, and no visible leaks exist, I would suspect you have a blown head gasket. If this engine was ever overheated severely, the head is likely warped. These engines are somewhat susceptible to head warpage and cyl. head leaks if overheated (alum head on iron block). The bad idle problem may be due to plug fouling from the leaking water in one (or more) combustion chambers. If the head gasket is really blown, you could get possible water/oil mixing. This would show up as cream-colored oil, or oil floating on top of the coolant.
You likely have to pull the head, possibly have it resurfaced, and re-install with a new cyl head gasket. Don't forget to change the oil after this.
My 320i has white smoke in the exhaust and will not idle. It starts fine. What adjustments could be needed? It is fuel injected and I was told it was fine until someone tried tune it up.
Thanks,
rc
