Does weaker spring tension result in higher than normal control pressure, or lower?
Lower spring tension would result in lower control pressure as the valve back to tank is more easily opened.
I ask because I wonder if a spring adjustment is what I need, or if it's a more terminal problem with the heating of the bimetallic strip by the electrical connection.
Once the strip gets hot, I believe it bends upwards, closing the valve slightly.
Just to clarify, when we are say WUR, we are talking about the 4x2" silver metal box that lies just below the starter, right?
Yep, thats the one.. mine also has a vacuum lead on it.
I am assuming your have no vacuum leaks, your throttle by-pass valve is ok and your timing and mixture are correct.
At normal operating temprature if the mixture is lean then a small richer mixture adjustment here might help on cold starting. If the mix is ok, then the regulator needs a minor adjustment. The valve itself is not opening enough when its cold.
