Shocks life (archive)

How long should the original shocks last on a Bimmer? I have a '97 328i with 57k miles on it. I have an annoying 'shudder' in the rear end under 50mph. Tire problems are officially eliminated... to the point of replacing the tires after suspecting out of round. My next suspicion is shocks..
