My 79 is newly acquired so pardon elemntry question.

anyhow my question is that the steering is very "tight" but that is not all. as you turn the wheel it will turn nicely and then all the sudden stick. then turn nicly and stick. this makes it very hard to corner smoothly and i fear i may be damaging it to drive it. how do i go about adjusting/changing this? and what would cause this?

thanks in advance for the help

I tend to think it's the u-joint in the steering column. I have actually seen this before(as a tech in a former life)
