thanks for the help so far.
since i fear i was unclear i will try to rephrase the problem. it is not that it is tight(which it is) but that it is sticky. i tried greasing the joints and it helped but not enough. i will look for the adj. screw. if you were to add grease as peter suggested where would you do that?

you really can't grease the column u-joint, it has to be replaced. To grease the rack properly, it really should be disassembled. You can lube some parts of the rack by removing the rubber boots but there are needle and roller bearings in the pinion that should be greased. The adjustment in the rack is behind the dust shield facing the rear of the car. hope we were help.
