1.8l stalling/dying when hot, need help.. (archive)

Guys,

the victim: '82 320i (1.8l)

the problem: car stalls/dies after it's run for about 10-15 minutes, will not restart until it "cools" for about 30 minutes. Fuel pumps operate when ignition is turned on, testing indicates no spark at plug wires.

the history: swapped coil, ignition control unit (black plastic module bolted to left inner fender), "brain" box (silver metal box bolted to firewall above glovebox) with known good parts, but no change.

today's results: out of (almost) desperation, swapped the distributor with a known good unit, car started and ran for 15-18 minutes, then I had to shut car off and quit working on it for today.

what I want to know: has anyone been thru this before??? anyone have a plausible explanation? Does it sound like the car is fixed??
