I've installed the 218hp 3.5 litre euro-spec big six in my 1979 320/6. It's not the easiest swap, but not impossible to do. I used a 1979 635CSI engine and a 1985 535i 5-speed gearbox. Of course you will need to fabricate engine mounts, the driveshaft has to be changed (shortened and bigger head to fit gearbox), cooling system must be altered, etc.
