A shocking question (archive)

I recently bought an ’82 320i. I don’t have a huge budget, but my plan is to upgrade parts as they need replacing. Nothing too radical mind you. After all there isn’t much reason to try to improve on perfection is there?

First on the list are new shocks. I’d like to be able to use Bilstein but the quote I got for installation puts them out of my price range. Can anyone tell me if it would be unreasonably difficult to install them myself? If not, do you have any tips/suggestions on the job? Otherwise, how about a suggestion on alternative (cheaper) shocks that will not ruin the magnificent handling characteristics of my beloved BMW.

On similar note, if I can save enough on the installation, I’m considering putting in some Eibach springs while I’m at it. Does anyone have any experience with this? Any thoughts or suggestions?

I’m sure that I will have many more questions in the future, but this should do for now.

Thanks,
Ben
