Munich (dpa) - In a classic example of racing improving the breed, Bavarian carmaker BMW says it plans to install a Formula 1-inspired V10 engine in the next generation M5 sports saloon.
Currently no slouch - the M5 turns out 400 brake horsepower from a V8 - the new car, codenamed E60, will get a five-litre, 10 cylinder engine able to rev to a spine-tingling 9,000 rpm. M stands for motorsport at BMW.
The new four-valve V-10 unit will be mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox. This dispenses with the conventional H gearshift pattern, carrying out clutchless up and down changes in rank like a motorcycle.
The new engine will also be offered in the proposed new 6 series coupe, the M6, which is also due to debut in 2003, Germany's auto motor und sport magazine reports.
A homegrown BMW V-10 is at the heart of the successful Williams- BMW Formula 1 package driven this season by Ralf Schumacher and his partner Juan Pablo Montoya.
