In Reply to: How hard to remove Cam from 1.8? posted by Jess on July 21, 2001 at 01:40:42:

This might be doable in the car, if you disconnect the driveline and tranny base so the front engine can tilt up. And maybe remove the radiator (?). Still I haven't done it in the car, so I can't testify. To get the cam out of the head:

pull the distributor
remove the valve cover
remove the top timing cover
remove the cam sprocket
remove the plate that retains the front of the cam (2bolts)
now you'll have to crank the cam till only 3 of the valve springs are compressed
loosen all cam lobes

now the hard part:
using 3 screwdrivers, rock the 3 rocker arms away from the cam, and have someone pull the cam out beyond the 3 rocker arms.
repeat process till your clear

not easy without the special tool that tilts all rocker arms away, but it's doable. I just wouldn't want to do it IN the car!

I have a friend that had a fiber glass hood and fenders and had a racing cam installed. He hit something so the front end it damaged. he said I could take the cam. How hard it it to remove it?
What do I have to remove before letting the cam free? Im going to take mine to a shop and have them swap them out! He said it made it gain a lot of power than before even with a 1.8

To all you 2.0 dudes yes I know its not as fast as a 2.0.
