323i vs. Calif smog-anyone done this? (archive)

I know this could be a battle so I was wondering if any insight. I might just register in Arizona (no smog) but prefer to do it right...if at all possible
Car is total euro 1979 323i-titled in Arkansas but no DOT or EPA labels(shhh) so I doubt any conversion went on. I think I might be answering my own question but am known by the local authorities for "just moving here from Arizona" and dont think I can pull it off with my future(hopefully)daily driver! Any imput appreciated!
