The 80-82 5speed is different, as the fifth gear is an added overdrive, making it a 3 piece. The 83 has the 5th gear integrated, making it slightly shorter, and thus making the driveshaft longer. What you can do is get the front section of the driveshaft from any 80-82 model. The rear is the same length, it's the front that they changed over the years. It's probably a good move to switch over to the earlier style, from what I understand they're much sturdier, although I haven't had any problems with my 83...yet hth!
