I think the 77 fan shroud is intended to mate w/ a fan that's sized smaller in diameter than the fan from the 80-83 e21. It can be made to fit, but slight modification will be necessary. I did this for my 323 - not necessarily for engine cooling improvements but - to improve A/C condenser efficiency.

It's worth it, especially in my neck of the woods. It hit 104F deg. this afternoon....
