Hey Tim -

I replaced my starter on my '79 earlier this year in the cold. My solenoid was also toast. If you can renew just the solenoid, you might want to try that (way easier than yanking the whole thing).

When I got it out, I removed the air filter and
cover, unseated the whole fuel dist. assembly (two rubbery nuts), and had to take a bunch of hoses off for better access. Oh, I took the battery out, too.

Take off the bracket held in by three or so bolts (as in the book), and then look for the big (17mm?) nuts and bolts. These took forever to get the wrenches onto, but once you've got them, you're all set. Undo those, then you can yank the starter out. I went up and out past the airbox and battery.

This was the 1st intro to working on my 320, and it's been downhill ever since. Brakes + suspension next!

my starter is dead, I have been wacking the starter solenoid b/c it was sticking, but now, its just dead. How hard is it to change the starter in a 83 320i. I hear there is something I can remove that will give me easier access to the starter but I don't know what it is?
thanks
Tim
