Back in '96 when I talked to RD enterprises, aka SHOX.com, about a set of bilsteins for my e28 535i, I also found them to be higher priced. I ended up purchasing shocks through eurasian.

After that, I never bothered to price them again. If they indeed merged, then possibly higher volume potential could see price margins going down.
