323i tranny question (archive)

I read a while ago, somewhere in the archives, that the "engine from a 79-81 528i is similar to the 6 in a 323i". First of all, is this true? If it is, then am I to assume that the tranny in the 5series would be the same thing as the tranny in the 323i

Just wondering, as there is (still) a 81 528i sitting at a local wrecker, and he wants to crush the car asap.

and i will most likely need the e21 323i tranny for my 'm20 into 2002 swap'. (unless i get really creative with a torch and use the m20 5speed :)
