You're air flow meter is probably out of adjustment and you are running too rich. If you introduce an unmetered air source and the idle improves, that usually means you've got too much fuel coming in.

Ok, so i've got my '81 w/ rebuilt head put back together. the car starts up and idles great, but the thing that concerns me is that when i open the oil filler cap or oil dipstick, it doesn't affect the idle. it idles right under 1,000 and sounds great (better than i've gotten either of my 2002s).

Why is this happening? I've sprayed starting fluid around the vacuum lines and don't see any noticable changes to the idle. any ideas? TIA
