I've noticed a squeaky noise emminating from underneath my 83. Its pitch depends on speed, the higher the rpm, the higher the squeak, when I'm slowing to a stop, it sounds like an old rocking chair. Is this the sign of a worn center bearing? The guibo? The front guibo has been recently replaced, and this noise sounds like it's coming from the rear. I looked under there and didn't see anything touching any moving parts. I'm about to put a LSD in, and I was going to replace the guibo in the rear anyway, but should I also do the center bearing while I'm down there? Is this an incredibly diffuicult task? Just would like to know what I'm up against so I can get it done right the first time, since the car's my daily driver. Thanks in advance!

My '83 320i only has a flex disc between the driveshaft & the trans.(std. trans.). In my experience when the flex disc goes out you begin to get a vibration. I'm pretty sure your center bearing is what's going out. The first thing you do is remove the 4 bolts & nuts at the rear of the driveshaft. Then get the exhaust heatshield out of the way to access the center bearing. Now remove the 2 nuts holding the center bearing. Finally remove the 6 bolts & nuts connecting the driveshaft to the flex disc & the flex disc to the trans. input shaft. You should probably have a machine shop remove the old & install the new bearing. It can be done at home but be careful!!
