Front strut & spring change on car (archive)

Has anyone ever changed out front struts & srpings without removing the strut housing fom the car (leaving bolted to control arms & tie rod ends). Looks like if you remove the support bearing nuts, drop the front sway bar from its mounts, and push down the strut housing will swing out from underneath the fender to allow replacment of the spring & cartridge. Any one done this?????
