Coolant - lok for oil floating on top.
Oil - look for creamish color indicating possible coolant leak, and smell of antifreeze.
Tailpipe - look for steam and smell of antifreeze.
These engines are known to be sensitive to overheating: iron block and aluminum head means things expand at different temp/rates. Sounds like a blown head gasket, but possibly head warpage as well. Tapping sounds could be a lot of things. When you pulled over, how long did you let her cool down before refilling with antifreeze?
my car over heated last week from a blown coolant hose. when i noticed my guage hit the red zone i found a place to pull over. meanwhile when i accelerated it made a tapping sound when ever i touched the gas. once pulled over i ran water through radiator to find leak. i fixed my hose (leak) and filled with anti freeze. i got home runnig fine. car runs really hot 2 days later... i see im low on fluid in radiator(water boiled when it got to hot) i filled with antifreeze and runs good. week later and current day when i accelerate with load on engine it makes a poping sound and a loud clicking/ tapping
note: half quart low on oil today
