With the engine running the tank pump should be running full time. Its very quiet however and often hard to hear especially above idle speed with engine noise etc. Put a long screwdriver directly the top of the sender/pump under the back seat and cover plate and put the handle of the screwdriver hard onto your ear. You can hear it then.

Hello, Im a new guy on the board. I have had my 80 320i for about three weeks. Should I be able to hear my fuel pump with the engine running? Lying under the outer pump I hear nothing. Inside the car I can hear the tank pump at idle. There seems to be no change in tone or volume from full to half tank. Is this normal or is my tank pump on its way out?
Thanks to all
Ron
